If you’re new to irrigation, switching providers, or just tired of waiting on hold during a breakdown, you’ve probably wondered what actually separates a good irrigation company from an average one. It’s a fair question, and one worth answering honestly rather than with a sales pitch.
Here’s what we’d tell a mate to look for, regardless of who they end up going with.
Local knowledge
Canterbury isn’t one paddock. Soils can shift from stony to heavy clay within a short distance, water schemes vary block to block, and consent conditions differ depending on your catchment. A company that knows Mid Canterbury specifically, not irrigation in general, is going to size a system, place a pivot, and troubleshoot a fault differently than one working off a generic playbook. Ask how long they’ve been servicing your particular area, and how many systems they’ve actually got running in it.
Parts availability and response time
This is the one that matters most when things go wrong, and it’s also the easiest to check before you’re relying on it. Ask directly: if my pivot goes down in January, how fast can you get someone out, and do you have the part on hand or does it need ordering in? A good benchmark for a mid-season callout is same-day or next-day response, with common parts stocked locally rather than shipped from a warehouse somewhere else in the country. If a company can’t give you a straight answer on this, that’s worth noting.
Genuine parts and dealer relationships
Being an authorised dealer for a major brand isn’t just a badge on a website. It means direct access to genuine parts, proper technical support from the manufacturer, and technicians trained specifically on that equipment rather than generalists working it out as they go. Ask who they’re authorised through, and whether the parts going into your system are genuine or generic equivalents. The difference shows up later, usually at the worst possible time.
Training and support, not just install and walk away
A good company doesn’t disappear after the install. You should come away knowing how to run your system properly, not just that it’s been switched on. That includes a proper walkthrough at handover, and someone you can call with questions once you’ve been using it for a few weeks and the real questions start coming up. If a company’s model is install, invoice, and move on to the next job, you’ll feel that gap the first time something doesn’t behave the way you expected.
Questions worth asking before you sign anything
A few straightforward ones can tell you a lot:
- How many technicians do you have, and are they on-call outside normal hours during the season?
- What’s your typical response time for a breakdown in-season, and what’s it been over the last year or two, not just in theory?
- Do you stock parts locally, or do they need to be ordered in?
- Who am I actually working with after the sale, is it the same team, or does it change?
- Can I talk to a couple of farms you’ve worked with recently?
Any company confident in their service should have straightforward answers to all of these.
Why family-owned often beats large nationals on service
There’s no rule that says bigger is better here, and often the opposite holds. A family-owned local operator has a direct stake in their reputation in the district, tends to have technicians who’ve been in the area for years rather than rotating through, and doesn’t have layers of call centres between you and someone who can actually help. None of that guarantees quality on its own, but it’s worth weighing against the reassurance of a bigger name that might not know your specific paddock or catchment at all.
Where Plains fits against this
We didn’t write this list to flatter ourselves, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t confident about where we land against it. We’ve been working Mid Canterbury and the wider South Island since 1995, we stock parts locally out of Ashburton, and you’re dealing with the same team from installation through to a breakdown callout years later.
If you’re evaluating options, that’s exactly the comparison worth making. See what Plains looks like against this checklist, give us a call on 0800 752 467, and judge for yourself.
